Are you wondering what is open in Edinburgh on Christmas Day and over the Hogmanay period in 2019/2020?

Here’s a list of Edinburgh’s most popular attractions and their opening hours.

These will be updated as more opening hours are released.

Please note the current dates in this guide were for 2019/2020. For the latest information regarding Covid-19 in Scotland, check out my handy guide here. This guide will be updated for 2021 before December.

Edinburgh Castle

  • Christmas Day – Closed
  • Boxing Day (26th December) – Closed
  • 1 January, open from 11am to 5pm.
  • Normal opening times resume on 2 January.

Holyrood Palace

Holyrood Palace will be closed on the following dates:

  • 25th-26th December 2019

Revised opening hours apply on the following dates:

  • 24 December 2019: Last admission at 14:15, and the Palace will close at 15:30.
  • 31 December 2019: Last admission at 14:45, and the Palace will close at 16:00.
  • 1 January 2020: The Palace will open at 11:00.

Edinburgh Christmas Markets

The Edinburgh Christmas Market opens on Saturday 16 November 2019 and runs until Saturday 4 January 2020.

The market is open from 10am – 10pm every day apart from:

  • 24 December 10am-8pm
  • Christmas Day – Closed
  • 26 December 12pm-8pm
  • 31 December 10am-6pm
  • 1 January 12pm-8pm

The Real Mary King’s Close

Tours are running between these times:

  • Until 19th December 10.15am-5.30pm
  • 20 December 10.15am-9pm
  • 21 December 10am-9pm
  • 22 December 10am-6pm
  • 23 December 10am-5.30pm
  • 24 December 10am-3.30pm
  • Christmas Day – Closed
  • 26 December (Boxing Day) 11am-6pm.
  • 27th-30th December 10am-9pm
  • 31 December 10am-4.30pm
  • 1 Jan (New Year’s Day) 11am-9pm
  • 2nd-4th January 10am-9pm
  • 5 January 10am-5.30pm

National Museum of Scotland

  • 16th December-24th December 10am-5pm
  • Christmas Day – Closed
  • 26 December 12pm-5pm
  • 27th December-31st December 10am-5pm
  • 1 January 12pm-5pm

  • 16th-23rd December 9am-9pm
  • 24 December 9am- 7pm
  • Christmas Day – Closed
  • 26 December (Boxing Day) 10am-9pm
  • 27th-31st December 9am-9pm
  • 1 Jan 10am-9pm
  • 2nd-6th January 9am-9pm

The Scotch Whisky Experience

  • Saturday 21st December – Friday 3rd January – operating on extended opening hours. Tours will run from 10am – 6.20pm, with Platinum Tours at 6.45pm and 7.15pm (dependent on availability). The Whisky Shop will be open from 10am – 9pm daily. Additional Tasting Tales sessions at 4pm daily from Thursday 26th December through till Thursday 2nd January (excluding Christmas Day).
  • Christmas Day – Closed
